Revanta Sarabhai

Revanta Sarabhai has been involved with all aspects of theatre and dance since an early age. He is a professional dancer with the Darpana Performance Group and runs his own multimedia design company in India.

Revanta is a graduate in the classical Indian dance style of Bharatanatyam and has trained in various other Indian classical, folk and contemporary forms. He has toured Australia, China, Europe, the UK and the US performing with Darpana. In recent years, Revanta has also started experimenting with choreography, combining aspects of classical dance with innovative contemporary movement. He has designed the lighting for a considerable number of Darpana’s dance and theatre productions over the last eight years, including Cityscapes (1999) and The Leopard (2000). He was an associate choreographer and lighting designer for Mallika Sarabhai’s The Journey Inward: Devi Mahatmya (2002) and Hot Talas Cool Rasas (2005). Revanta also did the choreography for Darpana’s production of Unsuni: Unheard Voices (2006).

Revanta co-choreographed and performed in a dance production on Gandhi called Mahatma: From Truth to Enlightenment at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in October 2003. In December 2002 he performed his first solo at the Purush dance fest in Bombay. The Purush (man/male) festival is specifically to promote Indian male classical dancers. In April 2005, Revanta premiered The Story of Eklavya in Philadelphia, his first one-man show that he scripted, choreographed, directed & performed. This piece was later performed for the Philadelphia Live Arts & Fringe Festivals in September 2005. In April 2006, Revanta premiered his latest production, The Transposed Heads at the Drake Theater in Philadelphia.

Revanta graduated with honors in May 2006, completing a BFA in Multimedia at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Having developed skills to integrate aspects of media, technology and the performing arts, Revanta is now based in India where he continues to work as a designer, performer and multimedia artist.
